[BETA] Okeanos - Sailfish IRC-client
« on: January 28, 2014, 07:11:43 PM »
Hi sailors,

I've been working been working on an IRC-client for Sailfish between work, school and starting my thesis since I got my hands on my Jolla-phone, and a bit before. While it seems I missed the mark on getting the first IRC-client to the platform, I'd like your help in improving my version. Nothing like a bit of competition to get the creative juices flowing.  ;)

Okeanos currently supports:
- adding / removing new servers (/networks)
- auto-saving servers
- joining channels and basic chat features
- cover-functionality:
  • flipping through open channels, and viewing the latest message on the channel
  • jumping to an open channel

You can download the latest release ( 0.1.8 ) here:
https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=58bba244a488b8d4&id=58BBA244A488B8D4!107

Known issues:
- cover shows channels, even after disconnecting from a server ( 0.1.8 ) Now intended.

Planned features:
- notify -messages
- settings for debug-logging
- settings for reconnect times
- settings for listing available channels
- editing server info (0.1.8 )
- user-to-user messaging (0.1.8 )
- connection restart after dropping connection (0.1.8 )

I am planning on doing releases twice a month, and would like your input on which feature to implement next and which fixes are most critical to you. Just mention the feature (or bug) in the comments and I'll try to keep track on which one is mentioned the most.

Suggested features (for 0.1.9):
- listing available channels

Word on DCC and file-transfers, I will not be implementing this in 1.0, which means I won't do it before I have a bit more time in my hands.

Hope to see you participate,
Bloob  ;D

I don't see any other IRC client in Jolla store or Warehouse. Are you sure you're not the first one?

Anyway: gonna check yours out! :)

Edit: View Servers shows nothing and Adding a server doesn't do anything after filling in the fields... (using 0.1.7 on SailfishOS 1.2.... well, the latest OS version)

Adding servers is dialog, it needs to be swiped left to "accept". If you did that and it didn't work, can you describe the steps you took so I might look into it. Thanks.

edit: also, there's a blog about the other IRC-client on JollaUsers. :)

Well, I just typed in the server address (irc.freenode.net), my username and password (also tried add. my full name) and swiping left just didn't do anything. I never get past the add screen...

If swiping left did nothing (ie. did not change views) then not enough info was given. Fill all the fields until the auto-connect -checkbox.

edit: Sorry for your trouble, but I'm kind of happy to already be getting feedback; note to self: clearer user-feedback to add -screen. :)

I looked up the port for Freenode (normally I don't have to specify a port in an IRC client but not really an issue as that was easy to look up manually), also filled that in and now the view did change. Only it doesn't connect... Or it does, but it doesn't show any channels.

(regardless of that: I really like the interface, good use of Sailfish swiping panels! :) )

In the "View servers" -view, you can long press on a server to join a channel. Currently you yourself have to know the name of the channel.

Nope, long pressing doesn't give the option to join a channel... :(

If the connection name (not the address) is shown in white, then it's connected and joining should be possible. A live connection also shows the option to Disconnect, else connection name should be "grayed" out and long pressing should be showing Connect and Remove -options.

Thanks for your efforts! :)

You're welcome :)

I do see the Connection Name in white and the disconnect option. Still, no cigar... Meanwhile, just for the record that it's not my phone, I gave that other IRC app you mentioned a try and with the same information it connects fine and I can use IRC no problem at all. So it isn't my phone. But I'll be watching your app, I'll keep trying whatever new version comes around, I know one day it'll work :D

Well, that's just downright weird, as "Disconnect" and "Join channel" options' visibilities are managed by the same value, and it's working fine on 2 phones already, but I'll look into it.  :o

edit: a hint though: you can add "/JOIN #channelname" without the "" to the server-information in"Commands after login." (the last input-area), to have it connect to a channel automatically after connecting to the server.

No, it's not, I might push it there at some  point, but it is not planned right now.
